What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves placing needles at specific points in the body to alleviate pain, promote healing, and improve function. It originated roughly 3000 years ago, but today acupuncture has evolved and become a more mainstream treatment to address pain and injuries.

Jason Williams DC is board certified in acupuncture by the state of Virginia and primarily uses Western Medical and Sports Acupuncture techniques.

What Can Be Treated with Acupuncture?

My practice of acupuncture focuses on treating neuro-musculoskeletal pain and injuries, something acupuncture can be effective at treating. Goals of care typically include pain relief, pain management, and improvement in sport or functional activity.

Acupuncture for back pain, neck pain, and sciatica are some of the most common complaints I treats. If you have a complaint as simple as muscle tightness, tension, or muscular discomfort acupuncture can often bring quick and lasting relief.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are filiform needles, in other words, they don’t have a hollow center like needles used to draw blood. Needles for acupuncture treatment come in a variety of sizes and styles but are generally much thinner than a hypodermic needle, which makes acupuncture relatively painless in most cases. The acupuncture needle technique is also something that affects how comfortable treatment may be. I have over 250 hours of education in needling and needling techniques and can modify treatments based on the individual to make it as painless as possible.
